Home > Revision Surgery > Revision Breast Plasty > Question about removal of chest prothese
In what cases do chest prostheses need to be removed?

In the following cases, the chest prosthesis should be removed:
1. Rigid prosthesis: this is a sign of capsular contracture, with an incidence of 2%~8%. There are four degrees of severity. For the first and second degree capsular contracture, continue to massage 3-6 months after surgery, once in the morning and once in the evening for about 20-30 minutes each time, which can reduce the breast stiffness caused by scar formation. If it develops to the third or fourth degree, the only way to restore softness is to remove the capsule by surgery, but it is still possible to harden in the future.
2. Prosthetic leakage.
3. Bacterial infection: Antibiotics and subthoracic cavity lavage can be used to control the infection, by which the prosthesis can be retained, but the probability of capsular contracture is very high in the future. If infection is out of control, the prosthesis must be temporarily removed and redone half a year later.

Can the prosthesis be taken out and autologous fat breast augmentation be done at the same time?

There are two situations because of the initial breast augmentation the different placement of the prosthesis:
1. If the breast augmentation prosthesis is placed on the pectoralis major muscle, autologous fat breast augmentation can be done after removal of the prosthesis.
2. If the breast augmentation prosthesis is placed behind the mammary gland, autologous fat augmentation cannot be performed because after the prosthesis is removed, there will be a large gap between the breast and the pectoralis major, and there is no blood vessel to protect the fat, so that the injected fat is easy to liquefy, be absorbed or form into a hard block, causing injury. In general, it is necessary to wait for the complete recovery of the breast tissue before breast augmentation with autologous fat can be done, which usually needs an interval of 3-6 months.

Will the chest deform after the breast prosthesis is removed?

It is very normal for some people to have flat, flabby and deformed chest just after removal of chest prosthesis. If the process of breast augmentation prosthesis is compared to blowing a balloon, the inflated skin will be like a balloon that the original balloon will be deformed after deflating. The implantation of the prosthesis increases the volume of the breast. Now the prosthesis is removed, and the shape of the chest has no support. It will naturally be loose and slack. Even so, human skin and tissues are elastic to help restore with gradual retraction after the removal of the prosthesis normally and the situation will be much better in half a year. In the case of severe chest prolapse after removal, it is recommended that autogenous fat breast augmentation or reimplantation of the prosthesis, or mastopexy can be selected for improvement.

How long can the prosthesis be implanted again after the breast prosthesis is removed?

It will take some time before the prosthesis can be reimplanted in either of the following cases:
1. While infected, breast augmentation surgery can be performed after 3 months;
2. If the prosthesis is leaking, the leakage should be removed first. 3-6 months after the wound healing, breast prosthesis implantation should be considered.
